The youths in Mathare have managed to start efforts of recycling solid waste as a means of cleaning their neighbourhoods and creating employments. Groups have emerged in small neighbourhood to coordinate collection of garbage. Residents are charged a small fee. Unfortunately some are unable to place to throw away and hence forced to dump the garbage along the main road hoping the the City Council will collect them.
Youth concerned with environmental impact of such practice have started initiatives with small villages to clean their own communities. There is demand for structured and coordinated ways of collecting garbage in the slums. Apart from just collecting and putting the garbage in designated points, the youths have managed to establish mechanism to clean their communities. It is therefore common to find heaps of garbage along Juja Road. In the next two weeks, I will bring stories of two groups which have started recycling projects of both organic and non-organic solid waste. – Simon
